with reference to your letter of the loth ultimo

(514598/2) and previous correspondenas relative to the

national at¬tus of ar. Ho Shai Lai (kobart Ho Tung) I

am directed by secretary Sir susten Chamberlain to

inform you that, in reply to enquiries made of the

Chinese Chargé d'Affaires Dr. Chen states that Mr. Robert

Ho Tung, who is at present out of this country, has

not made any declaration at the Chinese Legation

renouncing British nationality;

thas a Chinese passport

issued to him in error, would be recovered from him if

possible; and that he is regarded by Dr. Chen ss a

British subject.

2. A copy of this letter is being sent to the

Colonial office.
